Prepared food factories require tremendous amounts of water to maintain sanitary conditions. Given the high organic content of food processing waste, pre-treatment is required before these flows are suitable for discharge to sewer systems or waterways.
Primary clarification / sedimentation or Dissolved Air Filtration (DAF) systems are the most frequently used pre-treatment processes for food processors. Conventional screens are typically needed before materials can enter sedimentation or DAF systems and those conventional screens require their own separate dewatering system.
Unfortunately, however, sedimentation systems require a massive footprint, significant capital construction costs, and when aeration is used, they require a great deal of energy. As a permanent fixture, clarification systems have a long lead time to build and offer little flexibility for expanding operations to meet spikes in demand.
DAF systems require a constant loading and feed rate thus requiring a large equalisation basin with mixing equipment to prevent settling and surge loading. In many cases, DAF systems will require expensive chemistry and always require compressors to deliver a considerable amount of air. These are not optimal solutions.
Our industrial water management solutions can help you reduce your wastewater treatment costs, protect expensive downstream processes, increase your by-product recapture, and help you to reuse your water faster and more efficiently.
Sedimentation systems are typically huge. For operations that just require removal of inorganic materials like dirt and sand from their sedimentation systems, our HeadCell® and Grit King® sedimentation concentration systems can provide equivalent sedimentation / clarification to a very large sedimentation basin but in a fraction of the footprint.
When your clarification system needs to remove organic solids and particulate Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) as well as sediment, there is an alternative to sedimentation. The Hydro MicroScreen™ rotating belt filter can replace primary clarification in just 10% of the footprint, and uses just half the energy. The system often costs less than half of a typical clarifier installation.
In most applications the Hydro MicroScreen™ has comparable or better removal than clarification / sedimentation systems for Total Suspended Solids (TSS), particulate Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), and (depending on temperature) Fats, Oils, & Grease (FOG) and requires virtually no detention time. Outputting 2-4% Total Solids (TS) directly off the screen, the system can also be supplied with an integral dewatering section to output 30-50% TS.
