Hydro-Logic River Sentinel

Deploy Continuous Water Quality Monitoring for Section 82 anywhere with the solar powered Hydro-Logic® River Sentinel.

The Hydro-Logic® River Sentinel is a continuous water quality monitoring system that provides autonomous sampling and telemetry to enable water companies to comply with Section 82 of the Environment Act.

This new Hydro-Logic® River Sentinel will automatically take samples of the river water and the Sonde sensor unit will measure the range of parameters required by Section 82 - dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, ammonia and turbidity.  The system also has spare capacity for additional parameters.

Built on our extensive experience in hydrometry, the core technology inside comprises our Hydro-Logic® Flexi Logger 105 which provides easy configuration, setting and data telemetry alongside the robust AquaTroll 700 Sonde and sensors for each of the required parameters. The system also includes a spare sensor port should an additional parameter need monitoring.  With solar panels providing power, the Hydro-Logic® River Sentinel can easily be deployed anywhere, including remote locations.

Inside the kiosk a Hydro-Logic® Flexi Logger 105 monitoring and telemetry logger controls the system and transmits data.  It triggers a sample reading every hour, or every 15 minutes when there is a high risk of discharges.

The riverside kiosk configuration also includes a peristaltic pump to lift up water samples into the collector vessel.  Here, an AquaTroll 700 Sonde with the required sensors inside measures the water quality.  The water sample is then returned to the river by the pump.

Data is fed to the Hydro-Logic® Flexi Logger 105 which transmits the data to the Hydro-Logic® Timeview data visualisation system, which provides short-term data storage, data view and analysis.

An in-river configuration is also available.

Q

Why is Continuous Water Quality Monitoring important?

A

The continuous monitoring will enable water companies to find out how the discharges from sewage treatment works and sewer overflows are affecting the water quality of the receiving rivers.  The data collected will help them plan their improvement programmes to meet the Storm Overflow Discharge Reduction plan.  It will also improve understanding of water quality and how it’s affected by discharges from sewer overflows and sewage treatment works.

Q

What needs to be measured for Section 82?

A

There are five parameters that must be monitored for Section 82:  dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, ammonia, and turbidity.

Q

How often should samples be monitored

A

Monitoring must be every hour, but when there is a high risk of discharges then every 15 minutes.  The data will show the impact on water quality in near real-time.

Q

How is the system powered?

A

The Hydro-Logic® River Sentinel system is trickle-fed by two, 50Watt solar panels and a lithium battery.  This makes it ideal for deployment anywhere, even in remote locations away from the power network.
