Much Wenlock flood protection project wins sustainability award

The Much Wenlock Flood Alleviation Scheme in Shropshire, UK, has won the 2018 Sustainability award at Flood & Coast's annual Project Excellence Awards.

The Much Wenlock Flood Alleviation Scheme has won the "Sustainability" category at the Flood & Coast 2018 Project Excellence Awards in Telford on the 21st of March 2018.

Projects in the "Sustainability" category had to demonstrate how they have managed resources sustainably, providing evidence of measures for carbon reduction, use of resources and materials, effective management of waste and routine operational and end-of-life considerations.

The flood protection project, designed and developed by WSP and completed in November 2017, incorporates three Hydro-Brake® flow controls to manage flow and store flood water upstream, protecting properties and the environment downstream.

The Much Wenlock project is also one of the first Hydro International flood protection systems to incorporate Smart Monitoring

About the Much Wenlock flood alleviation scheme

The £2M ($2.6M) project was initiated by Shropshire Council to prevent flooding to homes and businesses in the small town of Much Wenlock.

The project includes the construction of flood storage ponds on the Shylte and Sytche Brooks that act as storage during heavy rain, and which allow water to drain in a controlled manner to reduce downstream flooding.

Three precision-engineered Hydro-Brake® flow controls manage the flow, backing up flood waters into the storage ponds and controlling the release of that stored water back into the brooks.
